E-Bike incidents in the AK-Valley

Alle-Kiski Valley, Pa.  —  Recent E-Bike crashes in the Alle-Kiski Valley has sent at least 2 persons to the hospital, one with minor injuries in a New Kensington crash at the intersection of Catalpa Street and Kenneth Avenue.  The second crash occurred this month at the intersection of Drey Street and Freeport Road with severe injuries.

In the New Kensington incident, one person was transported after the vehicle and e-bike collided at an intersection.  Motorists on Kenneth Avenue have a stop sign while Catalpa Steet does not.  When AKVNEWS arrived on scene, the e-bike was off the street with a severely damaged front wheel and minor damage to the car.  That E-bike rider was transported to the hospital with minor injuries.

In the Arnold-Drey Street incident, a man in his late 30’s, early 40’s was lying on the sidewalk with apparent severe injuries.  It was reported the driver of the vehicle left the scene and was later identified by video surviellance from the Arnold Police Department.  The injured man was transported to Forbes Regional Hospital.

A quick search on Facebook clearly show that E-bike incidents can result in severe injuries and countless number of fatalities.

Pennsylvania defines a legal electric bicycle as a “pedalcycle with electric assist” under 75 Pa. C.S. § 102. To ride without a license, registration, or insurance, the e-bike must weigh under 100 lbs, feature a motor of 750W or less, have functional pedals, and be capped at a maximum motor-powered speed of 20 mph.

Many communities in the Pittsburgh region are adopting E-bike rules for their communities, as many communities battle the number of riders on the streets ignoring common-sense rules of the road.
